Ending Racism

I had one of my all time favorite parenting moments yesterday with Jade. We had gone to the library to pick up some books and DVDs when I saw a picture book about Martin Luther King Jr., so I decided to check it out. On our way home I was telling Jade a little bit why he was such a special man and a gave her a very brief overview of the racial tensions between blacks and whites during that time. Jade looked at his picture and asked, "Mom, is he a black person or a white person?" How incredible that she could look at someone and not even see the color of their skin! And it certainly isn't because she's not exposed to other cultures. Quite the contrary. Maybe that's why she didn't notice the difference, I don't know. All I know is that it was truly an amazing experience and I was very proud to be her mother at that moment. We have come a long way in the fight against racism. If only everyone could see people the way she does, as just people, and nothing more.
